An automated GitHub webhook pipeline that intercepts pull requests, audits code diffs for security vulnerabilities and performance bottlenecks, and posts line-by-line review comments.
Business Challenge
Senior engineers spend 10–15 hours weekly reviewing routine pull requests (PRs), creating severe deployment bottlenecks. Manual code reviews are prone to fatigue, allowing security risks—such as SQL injections, exposed credentials, unhandled exceptions, and inefficient $O(n^2)$ loops—to slip undetected into production branches.
Solution Delivered
Developed an automated PR review pipeline using FastAPI, Python, and the Google Gemini API. The implementation features: Webhook Ingestion: A FastAPI service listens for GitHub pull_request event webhooks and extracts the git diff and modified file context. Secret & Pattern Pre-Scanner: Deterministic checks flag hardcoded credentials, API keys, and sensitive tokens immediately. Structured Gemini Analysis (LLM-as-a-Judge): Sends the code diff to Gemini 1.5 via a structured Pydantic schema to evaluate OWASP security risks, edge cases, error handling, and performance impact. Automated Inline Commenting: Parses structured JSON output containing line numbers, severity ratings (CRITICAL, HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW), and fix recommendations, then posts them directly as inline comments on the GitHub PR via the REST API.
Outcomes Achieved
The system eliminates PR review bottlenecks by providing instant, high-quality code analysis within 30 seconds of a pull request being opened. It acts as an automated security guardrail, preventing high-severity vulnerabilities from merging while saving senior engineers hundreds of hours annually in manual code review effort.
